English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EAL/D)

Our school is proud to be a welcoming and diverse community, where 81% of our students come from language backgrounds other than English. With over 21 different languages spoken, we celebrate the rich cultures and experiences our students and families bring.

We understand that learning English can be challenging, so we offer special support for students who are learning English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D). Our teachers use tailored programs and activities to help these students build their English skills and succeed in all areas of learning. We also work closely with families to ensure students feel supported both at school and at home. At our school, every student’s language and culture are valued, and we are committed to helping all students achieve their best in a friendly and inclusive environment.

Teaching EAL/D students

For students who are starting to learn English as a Second Language, we provide special support to help improve their English skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. When new students arrive, an EAL/D specialist teacher checks their English level to understand what help they need. This way, we can give each student the right support.

Since EAL/D students spend most of their time in regular classrooms, we make sure all teachers have the knowledge and resources to help them succeed. We also offer extra help in small groups or one-on-one sessions for students who need more focused teaching.

Our goal is to help every student build strong English skills so they can do well in school and enjoy their learning experience.

Reporting on EAL/D students
Each semester, teachers report on how EAL/D students are progressing with their English. They will describe their English skills as Beginning, Emerging, Developing, or Consolidating. The reports will also include information about the progress students have made and the support they have received. This helps families understand each student’s learning journey
